Ingram Pushing For Better Facilities At Coongulla, Glenmaggie, Dargo

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, says the State Government should give urgent consideration to construct sewerage schemes at Coongulla, Glenmaggie and Dargo.

"I have met with both the Wellington Shire Council and Gippsland Water to discuss options for the provision of small town sewerage schemes to these communities," Mr Ingram said.

"A number of residential allotments in these towns cannot be developed due to the disposal of waste water."

Speaking in Parliament, Mr Ingram said the current situation was creating environmental and health issues due to discharges from the septic tanks "Coongulla and Glenmaggie come under the operational area of Gippsland Water, and the impact of discharge not only affects Lake Glenmaggie, but also has the potential to impact on the entire catchment down stream," Mr Ingram said.

"Dargo, on the other hand, comes under the operational area of East Gippsland Water. It is on the headwaters of the Mitchell River, which is a heritage-listed river, and the local community also has trouble with discharge from septic tanks.

"There are opportunities for the further development of residential allotments in both towns, but because they are located on the edge of the flood plain in the catchment of the Mitchell River there are some issues that cannot be addressed by using septic tanks.

"The area is part of the Gippsland Lakes catchment, and significant funding has been made available for nutrient reduction within that catchment.

"The State Government’s funding arrangements for small town sewerage schemes needs an overhaul to ensure that worthy projects like Coongulla, Glenmaggie and Dargo are eligible and deliverable at a reasonable cost to residents.

"With thought and work by both state and local governments, Gippsland Water and East Gippsland Water these small town sewerage schemes should and will be funded and built," Mr Ingram concluded.
