Feedback Invited On Free Hard Waste Disposal Weekend

Despite unseasonably wet weather, Latrobe City residents turned out in force for the free hard waste disposal weekend conducted by Latrobe City Council on 13 and 14 December, with over 3,000 vehicles attending.

All four transfer stations in Moe, Morwell Traralgon and Yinnar extended their operating hours from 8am to 5pm on the Saturday and Sunday, to allow residents to drop off up to two cubic metres of hard waste per vehicle.

Latrobe City manager natural environment sustainability, Matthew Peake, said that although queues did become quite long at times, most residents were extremely patient and cooperative under the circumstances.

"We predicted the free weekend would be popular with residents, and we were particularly pleased by the overwhelming response," Mr Peake said.

"As well as the usual items of hard waste, such as household furniture, mattresses, old televisions, stereos and computers; residents also deposited a mountain of white goods and scrap metal items.

"Many residents still seem unaware that whitegoods such as fridges, washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashers and microwaves, as well as other metal items like bike frames and metal bed frames can be deposited free of charge at our transfer stations all year round. There is no need to wait for a special disposal event to access the free service," Mr Peake explained.

The ‘Detox Your Home Collection Point’ at council’s Morwell Transfer Station was also well attended during the weekend, with over six cubic metres of paint, car batteries, gas bottles and fluorescent tubes deposited. "These are also items that can now be deposited free of charge all year round," Mr Peake said.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said council will now assess the outcomes of the free hard waste weekend to help ascertain the structure of any future hard waste service.

"We invite residents who attended the free hard waste weekend on December 13 and 14 to contact Latrobe City with their feedback on how they found the event, to assist with that assessment," Cr Price said.

Mr Peake said that while the free hard waste disposal weekend met the needs of numerous residents able to take their hard waste to a transfer station, some residents do not have the means to transport hard waste.

"Those residents are reminded that they can book for the April hard waste ‘pick-up’ collection by contacting council on 1300 367 700 before February 28.

"Residents should note that the full cost of the ‘user pay’ service has now been reduced to $20 per collection, or $10 per collection for pensioners and Health Care Card holders," Mr Peake added.
