Shrubbery scrapping enhances safety and amenity

A line of ornamental pear trees has been planted by Council in a section of Commercial Road in Morwell, following the removal of some shrubbery harbouring years of accumulated rubbish.

By Latrobe City Council - 4th October 2005 - Back to News

Council planted the replacement trees late last week between Chapel Street and the McDonald Street bridge on land abutting the railway line.

The planting creates a streetscape to the east of the CBD in Commercial Road that will blossom each spring.

Latrobe City’s general manager City Infrastructure, Michael Edgar, said that the shrubbery had become a repository for a considerable amount of ‘escaped’ litter over the years.

"Removal of the shrubbery opens up the landscape, and the ornamental pears (Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer') with their magnificent white floral displays will become highly attractive to passers by in coming years," Mr Edgar said.

Following removal of the shrubbery and rubbish, the existing stumps were ground out and the soil prepared for the new trees. Once the trees were planted, the remaining landscape was sown to grass.

Mr Edgar said that by eliminating the shrubbery in Commercial Road, public safety for pedestrians had also been enhanced.

"There is no doubt that the dense thickets that existed, could have provided some cover for mischief-making or worse. With two primary schools in the locale and a child care facility about to open mid way between the schools, the more open streetscape that’s been created will provide additional reassurance for those on foot," Mr Edgar said.
