15th Anniversary of the Polish Club

Wellington Shire’s Mayor Peter Gault will be on hand to welcome epic walker Lynn Murrell to Port Albert and the shire on Wednesday 30 March, to mark the latest stage in his mammoth 1800 kilometre solo trek along the length of the Victorian coastline.

By Wellington Shire Council - 30th March 2005 - Back to News

The mayor will greet Lynn at Port Albert Yacht Club at 9.00am.

Lynn – a member of the Victorian Coastal Council and Chair of the Western Coastal Board - embarked on his ‘walk the talk’ journey from the South Australia to New South Wales borders on 4 January with two specific goals:

  • to test first-hand the feasibility of linking existing walking trails to create a "great Victorian coastal walk"; and
  • create a greater awareness of coastal issues.

Wellington Shire Council will be hosting a forum involving its councillors and representatives from other interested organisations - taking the opportunity to discuss local coast issues of importance with Lynn, such as:

  • the Hatton Report - in relation to subsidence around Port Albert and neighbouring islands, as well as rising sea levels;
  • coastal erosion;
  • the ocean outfall at Delray Beach;
  • coastal subdivisions, including infrastructure to support development;
  • Gippsland Lakes;
  • The shire’s world renowned RAMSAR wetlands;
  • Coastal safety including the Coast Guard and lifesaving clubs;
  • Tourism infrastructure and investment.

Said Mayor Gault: "We’re delighted to be able to welcome Lynn to our shire and to some of the best coastline in Victoria, if not Australia.

"His visit provides us with a great opportunity to raise public awareness, through him, of coastal issues of particular importance to Wellington."

Local councillors will take it in turns to accompany Lynn for stretches of his walk along the Wellington coast, which also takes in Manns Beach, McGaurans Beach, Seaspray, Golden Beach and Loch Sport before he passes into East Gippsland.

He is aiming to reach the New South Wales border, where he completes his feat, by the end of April.
