Reservoirs Rising

Thanks to concerted action by East Gippsland Water and customers, drinking water stocks in Mitchell River reservoirs are starting to increase for the first time in more than three months

By East Gippsland Water - 18th June 2007 - Back to News

Over the seven days from 7th to 14th June the water storages went up from 28.4% to 31.4% full, with increased water production coming from emergency infrastructure installed by the Authority and customers further stepping up their water saving efforts.

Said East Gippsland water’s acting Chief Executive Officer, John Groom: "We’ve reached a significant milestone. We’re now producing enough water to meet demand within the Mitchell River System*, as well as a useful surplus to start replenishing depleted storages like Woodglen Reservoir."

"We greatly appreciate how customers have responded to recent, renewed calls to conserve supplies, which has greatly helped the situation. Increasing levels of water production from our emergency infrastructure has also had a very big part to play. The ten water clarifiers installed by Woodglen are together cleaning some ten megalitres of poor quality water from the Mitchell River each day (enough to fill ten Olympic size swimming pools), making it suitable for storage and consumption. A valuable contribution continues to be made by emergency and farm water bores.

"There’s plenty of scope for water production to be stepped up further using the clarifiers, additional emergency water bores and the five water settlement dams next to Woodglen Reservoir.

"The aim now is to ensure the amount of water produced remains above demand so that we can stock up reservoir levels as quickly as possible in preparation for the summer season. While there’s still some way to go, we’ll be endeavouring to remove Stage 4 Water Restrictions for Mitchell River System customers as soon as we can. In the meantime we’d encourage everyone to continue conserving where possible to help us achieve this goal."

The quality of the Mitchell River water being supplied to customers following treatment complies with the Victorian Government’s Safe Drinking Water Regulations and the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. The same goes for the emergency and farm bore water being used to supplement supplies.
