Parking Meter surveys to influence Council decisionSurveys to determine future of parking meters in Traralgon CBD By Latrobe City Council - 13th December 2000 - Back to News Surveys presently being conducted by Latrobe City Council will determine the future of parking meters in the Traralgon CBD.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning said that Traralgon CBD retailers and shoppers were being asked to respond to the surveys, giving their opinion on whether the parking meters should be re-commissioned, or permanently removed.
“Council at its meeting held on 5 June 2000, resolved that parking meters in Traralgon would be decommissioned for a trial period of six months from 1 July 2000, and that community consultation on the future of parking meters would be undertaken during the final six weeks of this period,” Cr Hanning explained.
“Now that the final weeks of the trial are here, we are keen to find out through community consultation the opinions of shoppers and retailers.
“A survey form for shoppers and those visiting the Traralgon CBD has appeared in the Express and are available at Latrobe City Citizen Service Centres. They simply ask respondents to indicate whether or not parking meters should again operate,” Cr Hanning said.
“If citizens have an opinion, I would urge them to complete the simple survey form and return it to Council by 5pm Monday 18 December,” Cr Hanning said.
“A separate survey of CBD retailers is also being conducted for Council, and every retailer in the affected area has been individually approached to respond.
“Retailers have not just been asked whether they would like parking meters to operate again, but whether their customers have changed their parking habits during the trial period, using street bays more frequently or less frequently,” Cr Hanning said.
“Their opinion and the opinion of shoppers, will influence Council’s decision on the future of parking meters, when the issue is discussed at the first Council meeting in 2001.
“Throughout the trial, Council has been closely monitoring how the Traralgon CBD may be affected by not having operative meters, while retaining time limited parking, as signposted throughout the town centre.
“All time limits and other restrictions, such as disabled bays, have continued to apply during the trial period and local laws officers have been enforcing these provisions,” Cr Hanning concluded.
Survey questionnaires can be by mailed to: Latrobe City Council, PO Box 345, Traralgon 3844, or delivered in person to any Latrobe City Council Citizen Service Centre, by 5pm, Monday 18 December 2000.
