Community Safety Month

Community Safety Month is held every October.

By Latrobe City Council - 26th September 2003 - Back to News

Its aim is to reduce the incidence of crime, violence, injury and emergency in the community through the promotion of safe practices, and ultimately leading to the adoption of positive safety attitudes.

Safety affects all Victorians at work, in schools, on the sporting field, in public spaces or in the home. Every year local community groups and government agencies take the steps to safety, enhancing their own safety and the safety of other, by organising a range of interesting activities to highlight safety in their community.

Community Safety Month reminds us that we all have a role to play in keeping our community safe. Negative perceptions of safety can be diminished through accurate information and increased safety awareness. Adopting safe practices reduces the risk of crime, violence, injury or an emergency occurring.

Each week of Community Safety Month has a different theme around which activities are organised:

Crime Prevention Week 5 – 11 October 2003

Emergency Services Week 12 – 18 October 2003

Injury Prevention Week 19 – 25 October 2003

Work Safe Week 26 – 31 October 2003

Last year over 500 organisations were involved in organising 715 community safety related activities in Victoria. There are many excellent examples of interesting and topical activities right across the state.

Some of last year’s activities included:

  • a Safe Stroll to promote safety in public spaces;
  • Primary school children painting safe drop off zones bright yellow;
  • displays highlighting important information for children about crossing the road safely;
  • Victoria Police talking to children about personal safety and identifying people to trust;
  • parents and learner driver programs;
  • a food safety training program for people from non-English speaking backgrounds;
  • community safety audits; and
  • an isolated elderly fire safety awareness program.

Groups can register an activity by going to the Community Safety Month website – www.communitysafetymonth.com.au. The site also lists activities already registered and provides further information and resources for people organising activities.
