Bass Coast Joins Un On Diabetes Day

Bass Coast Shire Council has joined with shires across Victoria, to declare 14 November World Diabetes Day.

In December 2006, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on diabetes.

The resolution recognised diabetes as "a chronic, debilitating and costly disease associated with major complications that pose severe risks for families, countries and the entire world".

From this resolution, a United Nations observed World Diabetes Day was born.

Bass Coast Mayor, Councillor Neville Goodwin, said being part of World Diabetes Day was a way of helping to raise awareness of the disease.

"195 countries are taking part, which shows what a major health issue this really is," said Cr Goodwin.

"There are over 246 million people living with diabetes. Unless we do something to change the way we are living, that figure is expected to rise to 380 million in the next 20 years."

Cr Goodwin said the focus of World Diabetes Day 2007 is diabetes in children and adolescents.

"As more children are becoming overweight and exercising less, type 2 diabetes is becoming increasingly common," explained Cr Goodwin.

"But in many cases, type 2 diabetes can be prevented by keeping a healthy weight and having enough exercise."

Cr Goodwin said there would be a lot of focus on diabetes throughout November.

"Diabetes Australia (Victoria) is the charity partner for the Great Victorian Bike Ride," said Cr Goodwin.

"The Ride kicks off on Phillip Island on Saturday 24 November and makes its way across Gippsland.

"That will certainly be a big event for our Shire."

The Victorian branch of Diabetes Australia is also organising a range of events and activities from 10 - 20 November. For details, please visit their website at www.dav.org.au.

As part of the first United Nations observed World Diabetes Day, iconic buildings across the world will be lit up in blue. These include the Empire State Building, the London Eye and Shell Tower, Japan’s Tokyo Tower, Melbourne’s Flinders Street Railway Station and the Sydney Opera House.
