Smokes Clears For Kids In Bass CoastBass Coast Shire Council has welcomed the ban on smoking where children play, which came into force on 1 April 2014. By Bass Coast - 8th April 2014 - Back to News "There are 51 venues in Bass Coast, including 41 outdoor public playgrounds, 15 sporting venues and four skate parks that host under 18s sporting events to which the new bans apply," said Mayor, Cr Neil Rankine.
"These bans introduced by the Victorian Government will enhance the experience for those who wish to take advantage of Bass Coast’s public recreational facilities."
The statewide bans further reduce the number of places where smoking is permitted in public areas in the Shire.
Smoking is now prohibited at or within a 10 metre radius of outdoor children’s playground equipment and skate parks that are open to the public.
Bans also apply to the outdoor areas of all public swimming pools and at sporting venues during under 18s sporting events.
"We are supportive of this move to protect the health of our young people in Bass Coast and reduce smoking rates," Cr Rankine said.
Council is implementing the statewide bans by erecting signs and enforcing the ban where necessary.
"Our first priority will be to make sure smokers are aware of the bans," said Cr Rankine.
"An educative approach is what’s required as people adjust to the new laws. However, people who are found to be wilfully flouting the law will be fined."
A penalty fine of $144 can be issued on the spot by council inspectors.
