Feeling fit and healthy? Then how about sharing your love of exercise to improve fitness levels for Wellington residents?

Council is giving people the opportunity to become nationally accredited fitness instructors free of charge, with the assistance of funding obtained from VicHealth and in partnership with the Wellington Primary Care Partnership group.

Wellington Movers and Shakers aims to increase the number of qualified fitness instructors across the Shire so that they, in turn, can pass on to the community the benefit of their training.

Recreation Development Officer Michael Rowell said that Movers and Shakers had been created to fill a particular gap in the Shire.

"The distance between towns in Wellington and the limited supply of trained instructors makes it difficult to provide enough casual physical activity programs for all our communities," Michael said.

"This fitness instructor course will give people the opportunity to gain free national accreditation to enable them to fill the gaps in physical activity programs in Wellington."

The course is normally valued at around $900.

The Certificate 3 in Fitness course is part of the National Training Package and contains two units:

· Administration and leadership, exercise science, fitness communication, client screening.

· Exercise programming and prescription, resistance training modules

The course will be conducted by correspondence combined with local support and training to ensure participants are going ok. "We want people to pass!" Michael said

It is expected to start around September this year.

Participants should allow about four hours a week for study and should complete each stage of the course within two months.

"Money, time and resources will be invested into participants on this course and all we hope for in return is that they will use their new skills for the benefit of their local community for a minimum of six months afterwards.

"Naturally, once accredited, they will be entitled to earn an income as fitness instructors, making this a good employment opportunity as well as a chance to improve the wellbeing of residents in the Shire."

Full details of the program and application forms are available from Michael Rowell, Council’s Recreation Development Officer on 5142 3316, Council’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au, Council libraries and most Neighbourhood/Community Houses throughout the Shire.
