Ingram supports legislation to ensure recreational-only fishing

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, today stated that he supports the government’s decision to legislate to ensure the removal of commercial fishing from Mallacoota and Lake Tyers.

"I support this decision and believe that the sooner the issue is resolved the better for all concerned," Mr Ingram said.

"The State Government has the constitutional power to make law to remove or reduce an individual’s rights… and most legislation infringes on someone’s rights.

"As I said consistently during the last election campaign, the Liberal and National parties would do anything to stop the creation of the recreational zones in Mallacoota and Lake Tyers.

"I stand behind my previous comments in support of Lake Tyers and Mallacoota being recreational-only fishing zones.

"The people of Gippsland East have lobbied and campaigned on this issue for decades and the government should be congratulated on taking decisive action to remove the uncertainty relating to the decision.

"The new legislation will give greater certainty in future issues of fishing licence holders on compensation matters.

"As this legislation contains significant changes in the management for the abalone industry, I will not be voting due a declared pecuniary interest in the abalone industry," Mr Ingram concluded.
