Community invited to embrace reconciliation

Two events to celebrate and embrace Reconciliation Week will be taking place in Latrobe City next week.

By Latrobe City Council - 25th May 2006 - Back to News

A morning tea will be held at 10am on Tuesday 30 May at the corporate headquarters, 141 Commercial Road Morwell. All are welcome.

The morning tea will be followed later in the week with a free community barbecue being held at the Gippsland Heritage Park in Moe from 11am – 3pm on Friday 2 June. Entry to the heritage park itself is also free for the event.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that council invites the whole community to both events to celebrate reconciliation and demonstrate solidarity with the region’s indigenous people.

Children’s entertainment will be provided at the barbecue together with the opportunity to taste some exotic fare such emu sausages and kangaroo steaks as well as the more traditional steak, sausages and burgers.

Children will be able to enjoy a jumping castle, face painting and an animal farm.

For catering purposes those attending the community barbecue are asked to contact Leonie Solomon-Green at Latrobe City, telephone 1300 367 700 by Tuesday 30 May.

Cr Price said that promoting the understanding and respect of different cultures and backgrounds of people and groups in our municipality and in society as a whole, is reflected in the many council sponsored activities the community enjoys.

"In recent years there have been Reconciliation Week events, the signing of the Victoria Multicultural Accord, Japanese Day and the Chinese Festival.

"At this time of year we celebrate Reconciliation Week and we invite all Latrobe citizens to come along, as reconciliation can only be really successful with the participation of individuals, communities, business sectors, non-government agencies and the Australian community," Cr Price said.

Latrobe City’s Koorie liaison officer, Leonie Solomon-Green, said reconciliation has become a widely-respected term, describing the process of developing better relations between the community at large and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

"In Latrobe City we have a large indigenous population and by celebrating Reconciliation Week we are appealing to an extensive cross section of Australians who are responding positively to it and its specific meaning," Ms Solomon-Green said.
