It’s time for "glass jaw Pete" to answer the question: Ingram

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the state leader of the Victorian National Party, Peter Ryan, to answer clearly either "yes" or "no" if he supports the removal of the Scoresby tolls.

By Craig Ingram - 8th November 2004 - Back to News

"Last week, in a full page press release that focussed on the Liberal’s position on Scoresby tolls, there were just two sentences where I questioned the National’s position on tolls," Mr Ingram said today.

"Poor glass jaw Peter has responded to my questioning of the Liberal Party with a vicious, venom-spitting tirade that clearly shows his vulnerability to the issue raised.

"Peter Ryan has described my comments linking the nationals to supporting the liberal position as ‘an outrageous distortion of the truth’ – or, in common language, a lie.

"In his press release, Mr Ryan has said ‘Mr Ingram has tried to link the Nationals to the same position.’

"Wrong, Peter. No distortion and no lie. I can - and have - linked the Nationals with the same position. "The federal National Party leader, John Anderson, has made it absolutely clear on numerous occasions that the Nationals demand the removal of the tolls and the press releases are still on his website for all to see.

"That’s why Mr Ryan cannot answer the question straight. He has the invidious choice to both break rank from the state Liberals and his federal National Party colleagues, or he condemns the rural taxpayers he purports to represent to the millions of dollars in costs in the attempt by the Liberals to buy a few Scoresby corridor seats.

"It’s time the state Nationals and Peter Ryan hopped off the fence on this issue and gave an unequivocal answer to the question on tolls.

"One thing is absolutely clear - any renegotiation of the contract on the Scoresby will come at a cost to country taxpayers, roads and services.

"As for Mr Ryan’s reference to my ‘Labor mates’, these are the same Labor mates that a National Party MP is a Minister with in the South Australian Rann Labor government.

"Peter, it’s time to get over the 1999 election outcome," Mr Ingram concluded.
