New Water Storage For Eagle Point And Paynesville Reaches Significant Phase

Work on a $2.5 million East Gippsland Water project to replace the open water storage at Eagle Point with two large, covered water storage tanks has reached a significant phase as the first tank takes shape on site.

By East Gippsland Water - 12th November 2007 - Back to News

The purpose of the project is to ensure high quality, secure drinking water supplies for Eagle Point and Paynesville customers for the long term future, taking into account the potential impact of climate change, extreme weather events and population growth in the region.

The new tanks will reduce the potential for water to be lost through evaporation and water leakage, as well as protecting stored supplies from bacterial and air borne contamination.

The first of these tanks is being installed temporarily next to the open storage, adjacent to Paynesville Road at Eagle Point. A crane has been used to carefully position each 6 metre high by 8.5 metre wide side panel into position.

Due for completion before the end of the summer, this tank will be capable of holding up to six megalitres of water (equivalent to approximately six Olympic size swimming pools). It will be used to store the drinking water supplies for Paynesville and Eagle Point over subsequent months while the open air storage itself is decommissioned and emptied. The tank will then be relocated to its permanent position inside the walls of the open storage, next to a second covered six megalitre tank – providing for a combined drinking water storage capacity totaling12 megalitres.

The operation is being coordinated to ensure there is no break in water supplies for customers and the whole project should be completed before the end of 2008. It is being progressed as part of the Corporation’s Mitchell River Water Supply Augmentation Program, designed to enhance water quality for Mitchell River water supply customers.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "This significant initiative will bring long term benefits for customers in Paynesville and Eagle Point. It forms part of our commitment to provide long term secure, high quality drinking water supplies, as highlighted in our draft Water Plan and Water Supply Demand Strategy.

"We will keep customers up to date with the project’s progress."
