Moe’s community quilt finds new home

A quilt made by local community groups that has been somewhat hidden away in a meeting room at the Moe Library for a number of years, is to be given a new home at the Moe Town Hall.

By Latrobe City Council - 21st September 2005 - Back to News

Latrobe City Councillor Tony Zimora said that the quilt was originally created to celebrate Australia’s bicentenary in 1988.

"Originally, the idea for the quilt came from former City of Moe Councillor, Betty Collins, who had envisaged a piece of art or craftwork to be created as a historical record reflecting the diversity of Moe and its people. The SCOPE Adult Education Centre (now i-GAIN) was approached to provide the necessary expertise to guide the project to completion," Cr Zimora said.

"According to records, a meeting of interested parties was held in August 1987. The Moe Bicentennial Community Committee gave the group a grant towards materials and tutorial expenses and work began on the quilt. Around fifty people, representing twenty-two community organisations made a contribution to the production of the squares and tutor, Mrs Helen Baggott, brought all the individual pieces together as one quilt," Cr Zimora explained.

"On its completion in May 1988, the quilt was handed over to the former Moe Council for public display and to preserve a unique piece of Moe’s future heritage. Now almost twenty years later, the quilt will once again be on public display," Cr Zimora added.

Cr Zimora said that local sculptor Jim Lawrence was building a display cabinet for the quilt.

"With the aid of a Latrobe City Council Community Grant, Jim is designing and building a display cabinet for the quilt, which will incorporate some ornate sculpted roses on the framework. The cabinet will set off the quilt perfectly and restore some grace back to this special piece of community craftwork," Cr Zimora concluded.
