Bass Coast Shire Council officially launched its third Walking School BusTM at Inverloch Primary School this week.

Two other buses are up and running at Newhaven and Wonthaggi Primary Schools.

Representatives from Council, Inverloch Primary School and Victoria Police, along with parents greeted the Bus as it arrived at the school.

The 10 children and three volunteers were then presented with certificates and showbags at the School Assembly.

School Principal, Stan Jackson, said it was fantastic to have a program that encouraged fitness, taught the children road safety rules and helped ease the congestion of cars around the school.

"I would like to thank Council’s Walking School Bus Coordinator, Kerri Ritchie, for all her hard work with us as well as the parents who have volunteered their time to make the program possible.

"I hope that as we move forward more children and parents will take up this great opportunity to get involved," said Mr Jackson.

Ms Ritchie said changing the established patterns of travel to school was a long term project.

"For many years travel has been changing from most children walking to most children being driven to school.

"This program is aimed at reversing that trend," explained Ms Ritchie.

The Council is funded to run the program by VicHealth and is currently seeking ongoing funding to continue the program for the next three years.
