Council seeks support for decentralisation from State Treasurer

Latrobe City Council mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan has written to Treasurer Tim Pallas seeking to commence meaningful discussions around State Government decentralisation.

By Portal Admin - 24th January 2017 - Back to News

Councillor O’Callaghan said Council has sought the meeting in light of the Treasurer’s support for identical initiatives in Geelong.

"In his 2015 announcement regarding the relocation of WorkSafe to Geelong he noted that ‘new headquarters will strengthen Geelong’s economy, bringing jobs and growth to the region… WorkSafe will boost the region'.

"Clearly the Treasurer understands the value of decentralisation. And clearly he was an important advocate and champion for Geelong.

"Our hope is to meet with the Treasurer and enrol him in the vision that decentralisation is an important economic boost for Latrobe City.

"The relocation of WorkSafe involved some 700 positions and a new building in the heart of Geelong. At the time this was the second State Government agency relocated to Geelong, with TAC moving to the region in 2009.

"Our determination this year is to secure a commitment from the State Government. We are adamant that an announcement which delivers jobs to Latrobe City needs to be finalised before Hazelwood ceases to operate."
