The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has gained an assurance from the Minister for Public Transport, Lynne Kosky, that Southern Cross Station will remain as an arrival/departure stop for rail services on the Bairnsdale line.

Speaking in Parliament this week, Mr Ingram called on the Minister to guarantee that Gippsland public transport services will not be stopped short of the optimal destination.

"For many Gippsland V/Line passengers, the termination destination of choice is Southern Cross station because of the connecting services, support for passengers, luggage arrangements and access to metropolitan and other V/Line passenger services," Mr Ingram said.

"The return of East Gippsland passenger rail services has been a great outcome.

"We have seen an increase in patronage on that network with a 107 per cent increase in five years to 81,000 passenger movements from Bairnsdale and Stratford.

"The action I seek is for the government to ensure that all Gippsland V/Line passenger rail services from East Gippsland rail stations, including stations at Sale, Stratford and Bairnsdale, terminate at Southern Cross station and not Flinders Street station."

The Minister responded to Mr Ingram stating there will be no change at all to the services that are provided.

"I give a guarantee to the member for Gippsland East and to his constituents that we will continue to the run services through to Southern Cross station," Minister Kosky said.

Mr Ingram said it must be recognised that the passenger rail services in East Gippsland are essential to the future connectivity of our region.

"We must maintain the highest possible service to all Gippsland passengers, no matter where they disembark from," he concluded.
