Top Marks For Wonthaggi School Walk

Wonthaggi South Coast Christian College was one of only 29 Victorian schools to achieve 100% participation in last month’s Walk to School Day.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 16th November 2007 - Back to News

The event, promoted by Vic Health, aimed to encourage more children to either walk or cycle to school on a regular basis.

Schools were set a goal to get every student to walk or ride to school on 24 October.

School Head of Campus, Carolanne Moore said this provided an extra challenge to South Coast Christian College.

"Because the school draws students from across a wide area, by necessity most arrive by bus, with a small number travelling by car," explained Ms Moore.

"There are only two students who live within cycling distance."

"So we arranged for the school buses and families in cars to all meet at the Wonthaggi swimming pool. Then we walked the last kilometre or so from there."

Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator, Don Turner, said Walk to School Day sent an invaluable message to students about the importance of exercise.

"But the benefits of walking go far beyond physical activity and general health.

"Feedback from participating schools shows there was an increased sense of community, less traffic congestion around the schools and a happier environment as children enjoyed each others’ company on the way to school," continued Mr Turner.

"An added bonus was that the children were more alert in class!"

"A number of Bass Coast schools took part in the day. It was wonderful to see everyone getting involved," Mr Turner finished.

Walk to School Day was supported by Bass Coast Shire Council’s Walking School Bus Program, which presented a ball to all participating schools. Other active transport initiatives that Council promotes include Ride to Work Day, Ride2School Day, Walk Safely to School Day and the Great Victorian Bike Ride.
