Great Southern Rail Trail extension between Nyora and Leongatha now open
Council is pleased to announce that the Great Southern Rail Trail extension between Nyora and Leongatha has been completed.
The Great Southern Rail Trail extension project increases the total span of the trail from 72 kilometres to a touch over 107 kilometres, making it one of the longest rail trails in Victoria. Construction of this new section involved rail track removal, gravel placement, drainage, road crossings, a viewing pad at Hilda Falls, and new bridges, decks and railings. The only piece left of the puzzle is to erect new wayfinding and feature signage across the entire stretch of the trail.

Project funding
An official opening for this section of the trail is earmarked for mid-2023. This extension project was funded by South Gippsland Shire Council and the Victorian Government with $500,000 from the Regional Infrastructure Fund and $800,000 from the Local Sport Infrastructure Fund.

Encourage economic diversity
Cr Nathan Hersey, Mayor South Gippsland Shire Council said, "Our rail trail from Nyora to Leongatha is open for the public to enjoy. The Great Southern Rail Trail is popular amongst locals and tourists alike. It will be great to see people enjoying a scenic walk, ride or cycle along this new section throughout the year.
"The rail trail connects many of our towns, is a perfect way to exercise and showcases some of our most beautiful scenes. The rail trail, winding through South Gippsland, will further enhance the offering to locals and visitors as we encourage economic diversity and promote South Gippsland as a fantastic place to live, work and enjoy." Mayor Hersey said.
