Local printer attracts national clients

Churchill based business, Gippsland Trade Printers, has proved that a regional business can successfully cater to a national clientele.

Located in Churchill since May 1997, Gippsland Trade Printers has a long list of clients and produces everything from flyers to notice boards for companies all over Australia.

The local business has been able to attract many clients by working closely with print management companies that act as brokers, sourcing the best quality and price for the end user. Gippsland Trade Printers provide the print management companies with a quote for their services and then produces tailor-made products for the niche market that the print management company specializes in.

"We produce whatever the print management companies put to us. This means that their client receives a better product for a better price," explained Gippsland Trade Printers Director, Warwick Judkins.

"Our task is therefore quite straightforward. We must deliver a quality product, on time, at a competitive rate so that we are selected by the print brokers next time. There are many printers throughout Australia and we like to think that we are amongst the best in our field," Warwick added.

According to Latrobe City Investment Manager, Leo Billington, the results of working in conjunction with print management companies are clear.

"Gippsland Trade Printers lists many well known clients that regularly have their printing completed in Churchill. For example, for over 12 years, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria has had all of their forms printed here, including forms for sales, auctions, leases, inspection reports and rental agreements. Anyone who deals with an estate agency in Victoria will eventually, at some point, use forms printed by Gippsland Trade Printers," Mr Billington said.

"Other national businesses that are clients of Gippsland Trade Printers include the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales, National Foods, Grandridge Plantations, Coca-Cola Australia, Australian Paper, Smorgans Steel, Carter Holt Harvey, Crown Casino, Captain Snooze, JB HiFi, ANZ, Westpac, Latrobe Regional Hospital and Coates Hire," Mr Billington added.

Although Gippsland Trade Printers was opened in Churchill seven years ago, the business has been located in Latrobe for over a century, with its ancestry dating back over 110 years to when the Morwell Advertiser was first established as a local newspaper. When the Advertiser became the Latrobe Valley Express, Gippsland Trade Printers was sold as a separate business to service a different market altogether.

Company Director, Warwick Judkins, has been with Gippsland Trade Printers for over 15 years and nine years ago purchased the business from the previous owners.

"I have always liked the printing industry. It is in my blood. The industry has managed to retain its characteristics even through all the technological changes that have impacted on us," said Warwick, who commenced his printing apprenticeship in 1965.

"Our business has managed to retain its market position and being located in Latrobe City has proven to be a great benefit. We have great access to overnight transport services. Our location costs have kept us extremely competitive and the communication infrastructure is here so we are always connected to anywhere else in Australia.

"Also, with Peter Ceeney as General Manager and a dedicated team of workers, we are now probably the largest general commercial printer east of metropolitan Melbourne. It is a family business committed to ongoing growth," Warwick added.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Gippsland Trade Printers demonstrates that Latrobe City businesses can attract and maintain noteworthy national clientele without relocating from the municipality.

"As highlighted by Warwick and his team, the growth and stability of Gippsland Trade Printers has been assisted by careful planning and taking full advantage of low labour turnover, lower establishment costs and a highly developed transport and e-business infrastructure, all of which are readily available in Latrobe City," Cr White said
