Community groups encouraged to apply for council grants

Following the success of Latrobe City Council’s first community grants information forum, local community groups have been encouraged to send in their completed submissions before the program closes on Thursday 24 August.

By Latrobe City Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, councillor Lisa Price said that the free forum, which attracted 160 people, presented specific information on Latrobe City’s community grants program for 2006/2007.

"All community groups or individuals providing programs and activities in the municipality are welcome to apply for funding. There are four grant categories: minor capital works, events, community development, and a new category - community venue hire.

"By providing the forum, we hope that community groups hoping to apply for a grant have gained a complete understanding of the grants process and are now well prepared to be able to complete their forms," Cr Price explained.

"Those groups or individuals that did not attend the forum are still encouraged to apply for funding and can obtain forms from any of council’s service centres or by downloading them from council’s website," Cr Price added.

"From previous experience, we know that the funding provided to the successful grant applicants in each category will result in the development of many useful community-based projects," Cr Price said.

"Grants are given to programs, activities, events or facilities that will assist in the ongoing development of the recreational, social and cultural needs of the citizens of Latrobe City.

"Many community groups are working hard to create infrastructure improvements, to organise events both major and minor, and to provide valuable community development programs within the municipality."

Cr Price added that one group which had successfully implemented the program funding was the Traralgon Railway Reservoir Conservation Reserve project.

The reserve project committee secretary, Alan Chambers, said, "The community group was successful in applying for funding last year, with the specific project purpose of completing a 100 metre path within the reserve, as part of a longer term plan. The grant monies were used to assist with the purchase of required materials, while labour was provided ’in kind’ by the group members.

"Obtaining this type of funding from Latrobe City in the past has made it easier for us to plan projects. Along with our own fundraising and the ‘in kind’ support from our group, the Latrobe City community grant funding has enabled us to plan and implement some great projects that improve the use of the reserve for the community.

"We’ve been able to add to the network of permanent pathways through the reserve, add concrete aprons to curbing to enable wheelchair access, and we’ve even been able to publish a colour booklet about the reserve with voluntary support from local teachers," Mr Chambers explained.

Cr Price added that the best way to support enjoyable recreational, cultural and community life within the Latrobe region was to provide essential and innovative amenities, services and facilities.

"This funding program may be the way for many community groups or organisations to receive help to make a start on a project or complete an existing one, and seeing the community interest expressed at the information forum, there is plenty of opportunity to work within the community to assist with the community’s development."

Applications are available from Council’s service centres at Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, and by accessing the webpage on www.latrobe.vic.gov.au

The deadline for applications is 5pm on Thursday August 24 2006.
