Redevelopment of Lex Glover Swimming Complex moves up a gear

Wellington Shire Council has established a steering committee to help drive forward community consultation on a proposed multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Lex Glover Regional Swimming Complex.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th August 2003 - Back to News

The aim is to turn it into a top class regional facility befitting a prosperous and forward-looking Shire which already has a number of other exciting multi-million dollar building projects coming on stream such as the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre and the Port of Sale development. All are set to benefit the Wellington community and Gippsland region as a whole.

When the swimming complex opened in 1972, it boasted the State’s first indoor heated pool outside Melbourne. However some thirty years on its facilities are in much need of upgrading, so that Wellington can meet the requirements of present day and future users from across the Shire, with many having greater expectations about the services a complex like this should provide.

Following a number of studies in recent years, the Council is now eager to progress with a major redevelopment of the complex, costing over $4 million, and is keen to receive the community’s input. It is your chance to have your say.

The recently established steering committee – comprising user group and community representatives, Councillors and Council officers - is now commencing the public consultation process.

Amongst proposals being considered for the new centre are that the main pool be widened from six to eight lanes and that the complex include provision for: a hydrotherapy pool; a learn to swim pool; a new gym, aerobics and cardio-fitness area; improved disabled and public access; new changing rooms and toilet facilities; a new entry, kiosk and administration area; a café; and a crèche.

A number of public information sessions are being held across the Shire this month, where the community can hear more from the committee about what is proposed for the redevelopment and put their views. Their feedback will be passed on to the Council and help determine the final plan for the new-look swimming complex. The dates, times and venues are:

12 August Stratford (Mechanics Hall) 12.00 noon - 2.00pm

Maffra (Memorial Hall) 6.00pm – 8.00pm

13 " Yarram (Swimming Pool) 6.00pm – 8.00pm

19 " Heyfield (Memorial Hall) 12.00 noon – 2.00pm

Rosedale (Public Hall) 6.00pm – 8.00pm

In addition there will be a public meeting at the Council’s offices, 70 Foster Street, Sale on 20 August, starting at 7.00pm.

Feedback sheets are also available to fill in from the Lex-Glover complex and the OA Ruff Sports Stadium in Sale, as well as from the Council’s Service Centres and its libraries across the Shire. In addition the sheets can be found on Wellington Shire’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au.

Subject to agreement from Sport and Recreation Victoria to partially fund the redevelopment it is hoped that construction work on the project will start early 2005 and be completed within 12 months.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "The Lex-Glover Swimming Complex is well overdue for a much needed upgrade to turn it into a top class facility. What is being proposed is a significant, up-to-date redevelopment and we want to ensure that we get it right, with facilities that will meet the Wellington community’s needs long into the future.

"We would encourage anyone who has an interest in the complex to attend one of the public meetings or fill in a feedback sheet. This is your chance to have a say on a very important sports and recreation project."
