Community coming to Saltwater Creek

Community coming to Saltwater Creek Saltwater Creek in Ventnor is an important part of Phillip Islandís landscape, and it needs your help.

By Portal Admin - 9th August 2017 - Back to News

A community planting day is being held on Saturday, 19 August, with involvement from members from Phillip Island Conservation Society, local residents, interested members of the community, Bass Coast Shire Council and hopefully you.

The day is open to anyone who wants to come and lend a hand, with all tools, including gloves, and plants being supplied by Council. Volunteers will meet at the end of Richardson Way, Ventnor at 10.00am.

Saltwater Creek has an interesting history, with the area being declared a reserve in the late 1980ís after a proposed marina development was successfully opposed by community members. The creek reserve eventually became a Crown Land Reserve managed by Council.

"We will be trying to recreate the type of vegetation that used to be there before it was modified for agriculture when Phillip Island was settle by Europeans," Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield said.

"We have a fairly good idea of what the area would have looked like having had a report done on this.

"It is exciting that we are now putting this information to use and putting back some important vegetation into this sensitive area."

So if you have a little bit of spare time on 19 August, come along to what will be a great morning.

If you would like more information, please contact Councilís Natrual Resources Officer on (03) 5671 2774.
