Westernport Water is working in close cooperation with Bass Coast Shire Council in their efforts to find a suitable site for a waste transfer station

By Carol McCormack - 4th June 2001 - Back to News

Westernport Water is working in close cooperation with Bass Coast Shire Council in their efforts to find a suitable site for a waste transfer station. One of the two sites under consideration is the Authority's Wastewater Treatment Plant on Ventnor Beach Road, which treats sewage from the Island and San Remo. Westernport Water understands that as well as the Ventnor Beach Road site; the Council is also assessing the existing transfer station site at Rhyll.

Westernport Water is pleased to be involved with the Council on this project due to the commitment of the Council to a full public consultation and planning approvals process where everyone can have input and receive comprehensive information about the proposal.

"We believe that the Ventnor Beach Road site fits well with the Council's criteria for the current investigation," explained Mr Tony Zoanetti, Chairman of the Board of Westernport Water. "It is centrally located for the residents of townships on Phillip Island and San Remo. As well, there are significant whole of community benefits, as less buffer land is required than if they were two separate installations."

The proposed site already has water, sewerage and effluent pipelines adjacent to it. These will enable suitable liquid waste from the bin and greenwaste area to be put to sewer and for treated effluent to be used for washdown water and for use in the greenwaste area. Scope also exists for the future manufacture of soil and potting mix from sludge from the treatment plant and fine screen greenwaste from the transfer station.

Mr Zoanetti also stressed, "The advantages for Westernport Water include meeting aspects of our triple bottom line. Sharing of resources such as providing land for the development of this new environmentally friendly facility has economic, environmental and social benefits for the whole community."
