Much loved and respected entertainer comes to Gippsland

By Kerilyn Wyatt - 14th January 2003 - Back to News

The effervescent and always entertaining Denise Drysdale is the special guest at Warragul’s Australia Day celebrations.

Australia Day in the Baw Baw Shire is an action packed day with plenty to see and do. Twelve towns throughout the Shire are planning festivities to make our national day one to remember.

As always Warragul will celebrate in style when at 11am Smith Street will come alive with the ‘SeaFM Australia Day Parade’. The parade will make its way up Smith Street to the Council offices in Civic Place where the official ceremony will kick off with a flag raising ceremony. Then at 11.30 the focus turns to the West Gippsland Arts Centre for two hours of entertainment.

Denise Drysdale has been a much loved and respected entertainer on Australian stage and screen for many years. Television shows such as the ‘Ernie Sigley Show’, ‘In Melbourne Today’, and ‘Denise’ have made her a household name. Her wit, humour and inimitable performance style will make Australia Day 2003 a memorable experience for all audience members.

The program also includes a citizenship ceremony, entertainment by the Warragul Municipal Band and local performer Catherine Black, and of course the announcement of the Baw Baw Shire Australia Day Awards. Awards to be presented include the Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Medallion Winners and Community Event of the Year.

Following the ceremony will be a light community luncheon. Admission to the West Gippsland Arts Centre is free and luncheon vouchers are issued only upon entering the Arts Centre for the formal proceedings. There are a limited number of meals available.

In keeping with tradition, Drouin and Trafalgar will kick off Australia Day celebrations with their annual breakfast and guest speaker program.

In Trafalgar you can start your Australia Day with some bacon and eggs and listen to special guest speaker Dr Milosh Ivanovich. Milosh is somewhat of a legend in the IT Industry and in 1999 he was named the Victorian Young Achiever of the Year (2000), as well as the Young Australian of the Year for Science and Technology in Victoria. The bestowment of this great honour has led to community, ambassadorial and leadership engagements that have seen him have lunch with the Queen, meet and advise the Prime Minister, Victorian Premier, the Victorian Governor, and speak at many prestigious events and celebrations. These experiences as well as his enormous success in leading edge IT&T technology will ensure that breakfast in Trafalgar is a most entertaining affair.

The Trafalgar Lions Club will provide guests with a fully cooked breakfast. Entry is free, however for catering purposes members of the community are asked to RSVP to the Baw Baw Shire Trafalgar Customer Service Centre on 5633 1911.

Drouin residents are also in for a special privilege with local identity Kevin Dale as guest at their Australia Day breakfast to be held at the Drouin Anglican Hall from 7.30am.

Kevin is a well-known Baw Baw resident following his success as a businessman both locally and overseas, and because of his extensive involvement in the Baw Baw community. Kevin began as a farmer and then went on to success in the travel industry. He established and operated several indoor cricket centres in the UK and more recently was one of the people who began the highly successful ‘Drypac’ manufacturing company in Warragul.

Entertainment at the Drouin breakfast will also be provided by Catherine Black and the Warragul Municipal Band. Breakfast will be provided by the Drouin Branch of the Country Women’s Association. Registrations are $3.50 per person and tickets are available at the Council’s Customer Service Centres in Drouin and Warragul. Registrations close Wednesday, January 22nd.

All residents of the Baw Baw Shire are invited to attend Australia Day celebrations held throughout the Shire. Anyone wishing to know more about any of the planned activities can refer to newspaper advertisements and can also contact the Baw Baw Shire Council on 5624 2411.
