Addressing Health And Food

East Gippsland Shire Council has been working with other Gippsland Shires to address health and food safety issues of regional significance.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 22nd March 2004 - Back to News

Bass Coast, Baw Baw, Latrobe, South Gippsland and Wellington Councils have joined East Gippsland and established a Gippsland Region Food Surveillance Committee.

The committee has met on several occasions and identified a number of food safety issues important to the region.

The committee aims to conduct investigations into these areas, produce reports outlining the state of current food safety practices, and highlight actions that could be taken to improve on those practices.

The first investigation conducted by the committee has recently been completed and involved a preliminary study on the suitability and safety of private water supplies used in registered food premises.

It has long been acknowledged that rural and remote areas in the state continue to rely on alternative sources of water. Common sources include tanks, rivers, streams or bores.

The introduction of National Food Safety Standards in 2003 required registered food premises to provide water of a specified quality (potable water). The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines is generally used to set the quality of water required for human consumption.

As a result of the investigation, guidelines have been prepared on the most appropriate collection, storage and treatment of private water supplies. This information is being distributed to all relevant registered premises in the Shire.

The following water supply characteristics were found to have significant impacts on the quality of the water contained in them:

  • the location of the tanks (either above or below ground);
  • the use or not of barriers to water storage entrances (guards/filters etc);
  • the appropriate dosing of chlorine to water supplies.

Similar investigations will be conducted in the future to ensure all registered food premises fulfill their responsibilities to provide safe food and water to consumers.

For further information to assist businesses meet the requirements for an appropriate water supply, contact the Shire Health Unit.
