Shire calls on dog owners to end public soiling

East Gippsland Shire Council is calling on dog owners to ensure they act responsibly when their pets soil pavements and public places.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 27th September 2005 - Back to News

Acting Local laws and Emergency Management Manager Terry Lamshed said a penalty of $100 applied to people who either allowed a dog to soil a public place or leave the mess without clearing it up.

"We have had a number of complaints about soiling in Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale in the last few weeks and we want to put a stop to it," he said.

Mr Lamshed said that under Local Law a person in charge of an animal on Council land must not permit their animal’s excrement to remain on Council land and must carry a device suitable for picking up and cleaning up any excrement that may be deposited by the animal.

"We have tried helping the community by placing 'Dog Tidy' bins throughout the Shire," he said.

"This was not continued because the units were subject to vandalism and the collection bags were deposited in the river.

"It is a simply a matter of responsible pet ownership and showing some pride in our towns and living environment."
