holiday season, with the storages back in full-scale operation.

The initiatives, in total worth $6.8 million, form part of the Corporation’s commitment to ensure all customers have secure, consistently high quality drinking water supplies for the long term future.

Work has involved lining and covering two open water storages, as well as replacing a third with covered water storage tanks. The objective has been to significantly reduce water loss through evaporation and leakage, and to cut any risk of soil, algal or airborne contamination of stored water.

Specifically, one of the water storages at Wy Yung - capable of holding 88 megalitres* of drinking water and primarily supplying Bairnsdale - has been lined with a geotextile material and 24,500 metres of heavy duty polypropylene sheeting. In addition a polypropylene cover has been installed over the top.

Similar work has been carried out at the 43 megalitre Sunlakes open water storage, supplying Lakes Entrance and Kalimna, with the project fast-tracked and taking only six months from conception to completion.

Finally the open storage at Eagle Point has been replaced by two, six megalitre covered storage tanks, with customers at Eagle Point, Paynesville, Newlands Arm and Raymond Island benefiting.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "Thanks to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved, including project managers Maunsell AECOM and contractors, these significant upgrades have been completed before the great influx of tourists expected over the Christmas holidays. We would like to thank customers for their patience and cooperation while the works were underway.

"These projects are part of a mammoth $45 million package of works being implemented to ensure the long term security and quality of drinking water supplies for 17,000 customers reliant on the Mitchell River Water Supply System. The overall aim is to protect against the potential impact of climate change and extreme weather events, and to address the drinking water needs of a growing population in the region."

As part of the package of works, East Gippsland Water has also allocated $26 million for a major new reservoir and water treatment plant at Woodglen near Bairnsdale, with both initiatives due for completion early in 2010. Preliminary construction work is well underway on the new reservoir, capable of holding up to 650 megalitres of drinking water, which will supplement Woodglen’s existing 850 megalitre water storage.
