Community urged to consider a volunteer role

Latrobe City residents are being encouraged to contribute a small amount of time by joining one of the many volunteer programs run by Council.

By Latrobe City Council - 24th April 2006 - Back to News

Council provides a number of services to the community that are ‘driven’ by volunteers in the community and is calling for more people in the community to get involved.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said volunteering at Latrobe City is a rewarding and valuable activity that helps many residents lead independent lives. "Volunteering not only helps promote inclusive and stable communities; it adds value to the many services local government provides," Cr Price said.

"While volunteering is great for our community and makes a huge difference to the recipients, it can also make a positive impact on volunteers’ lives too. Whether you want to improve your skills, meet new people or just feel good about yourself, volunteering can provide the opportunity to change your life in a very positive way."

Latrobe City’s manager Community Support and Development, Steve Tong, said council volunteers benefit in a variety of ways when they join the team.

"Sharing experiences with others can provide the opportunity to learn new skills which in turn can improve confidence when facing challenges in other areas of our lives. Working together to bring about a change is a great way to bond with others and become part of a community that can stay in effect long after your work is done," Mr Tong said.

"Many volunteers are surprised at how much fun it can be to help others and how little effort is needed to become involved. What people do not realise, is that volunteering is not very time consuming, two to three hours a month is all it takes to support people in your community.

"If you would like to benefit from the many advantages associated with volunteering and want to make a difference in your community, then we would like to hear from you. Current programs supported by council volunteers include: We Care, Meals on Wheels, Planned Activity Groups and Koori Elders’ Day. We look forward to others joining our team of volunteers," Mr Tong added.

Those who would like to know about council volunteers are asked to telephone Latrobe City 1300 367 700 and ask to speak with one of our volunteer support officers Rachel, Brenda or Kerryn.
