Walk, Cycle, Scoot Or Skate To School

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Walking School Bus program is lining up in an orderly fashion to support National Ride2School Day on Wednesday 12 March.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 11th March 2008 - Back to News

National Ride2School Day encourages students and teachers across Australia to leave the car at home and walk, cycle, scoot or skate to school.

The Walking School Bus program is supporting the event by holding a healthy breakfast/morning tea for participants at primary schools in Cowes, Newhaven, Wonthaggi, Inverloch, and Bass.

Council’s Walking School Bus Facilitator, Mr Don Turner, is pleased to see that many Bass Coast schools have already signed up to be a part of the fun.

"The kids that take part in the Walking School Bus program already know about the benefits of exercise and healthy living," he said.

"Now, by taking part in National Ride2School Day, other kids will get a chance to see the difference it can make to your day.

"Teachers are also being encouraged to add traffic safety education into the classroom program for the week."

There are many ways for schools to get involved.  Mr Turner notes that one of the first schools to sign up for National Ride2School Day, Bass Valley Primary School, has come up with a novel way for all students to take part.

"Bass Valley Primary School has a lot of students who travel long distances by car or bus to get there, so walking to school or jumping on a bike are not practical options," he explained.

"Instead, the school has organised for each class to cycle around the school’s Bike Ed track for half an hour.  Students will then be able to tuck into a healthy snack," he said.

Each participating school will receive a Certificate of Participation to acknowledge their effort.  The certificates will be presented by representatives from Bass Coast Shire Council or Victoria Police.
