Investment booming in Bass Coast

Investment in Bass Coast Shire continues to thrive, with millions of dollars invested in commercial endeavours over the past 12 months.

Bass Coast Shire Council has recorded a steady increase in interest from potential investors and developers in the region, in addition to many existing businesses looking to expand their operations.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said Bass Coast is definitely open for business, with the recently adopted Economic Development Strategy 2016-21 and Phillip Island and San Remo Visitor Economy Strategy 2035 detailing Council’s aspiration, drive and support for economic development in Bass Coast.

"Council has approved over $67 million in investment this financial year, and has another $69.9 million that has been proposed or is currently going through the approvals process," Cr Rothfield said.

"We know that investment activity in an area only attracts more investment activity. We have invested time and money into strategies that support and guide future development, and we have the infrastructure in place to make it work."

Recently approved developments include the $3 million redevelopment of the YMCA camp at Smith’s Beach, the $8.9 million new school for Newhaven College and $3 million Cowes Catholic Primary School.

In the pipeline seeking approval are projects including a $38 million hotel in Coronet Bay.

Cr Rothfield said even though these projects are still in the early stages, the interest from investors alone was a positive sign for Council.

"We know that not every new opportunity comes to fruition, but we are doing the best we can to support new ideas and investment, as well as supporting existing businesses to grow," Cr Rothfield said.

"Our fantastic calendar of local events, well supported by Council’s Events Team, is also a contributing factor when it comes to attracting investment, whilst also supporting the great culture we have here in Bass Coast."
