Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has pursued a commitment from the State Government to guarantee sufficient funding to ensure the ongoing dredging of the Lakes Entrance bar.

Speaking in Parliament this week, Mr Ingram advised the Environment Minister John Thwaites that Gippsland Ports will require major capital investment to replace its dredges "April Hamer" and "Sandpiper" in the near future.

"I have been pursuing this matter for some time and believe it was crucial that the State Government puts its intentions on the record," Mr Ingram said today.

"I asked if the government will commit to providing sufficient funding to ensure that the Lakes Entrance bar will be maintained in a safe and usable condition for commercial and recreational boating and to minimise flood risk around the Gippsland Lakes.

"In replying to my question, the Environment Minister stated that the State Government ‘will work with Gippsland Ports in implementing its recommendations for the future of dredging the Lakes Entrance bar’.

"Ongoing viability of the Lakes Entrance bar is not only important to the town’s economy and sustainability, but to the wider East Gippsland region.

The government and Gippsland Ports need to fund the next stage of the sand transfer system which is the bypass pumps on the ocean groynes.

"While the State Government has given some commitment, I will continue to work with Gippsland Ports to secure adequate funding for dredging and sand management at Lakes Entrance," Mr Ingram concluded.
