Track reopens access to Inverloch Surf BeachBeach goers can now access Surf Beach in Inverloch safely after Bass Coast Shire Council completed works to construct a new pedestrian and vehicle access track recently. By Portal Admin - 5th December 2016 - Back to News Beach access at the Goroke Street precinct of the Inverloch Foreshore had previously been closed due to damage caused by coastal erosion; a natural occurrence the beach has been subject to for several years.
Council has been undertaking minor maintenance works to fix erosion damage to the track using an excavator; however damage caused by significant storm surges and high tides experienced since July this year meant that repair required significant construction works.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said that the section of beach near the Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club is one of the most visited in the Bass Coast area.
"It is also a location that requires vehicle access in order to provide a life saving service and to allow access for other marine emergency services, such as search and rescue," Cr Rothfield said.
"With the nearest alternative vehicle beach access located over three kilometres away, it was critical that the Goroke Street track was reinstated in the interests of community safety."
Since the track was closed in July, Council obtained State Government funding, undertook survey and design works and gained the necessary approvals required to commence construction prior to the lifesaving patrol season.
Council has worked in close partnership with the Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club, other emergency service providers and key organisations in the development of construction plans.
The new track has been constructed along a different alignment to the former beach access track due to the height of the sand dune.
Any attempt to reinstate access along the former track would have resulted in collapse of the dune, potentially bringing erosion and windblown sand close to the Life Saving Club’s main building and the public car park.
The new track has therefore been designed to follow the natural dune and minimise the impact to natural erosion and vegetation loss.
The new track was constructed at a cost of $57,000, with a $17,000 contribution from Council and $40,000 from the State Government's 2016/17 Coastal Environment Program.
