Liberals comments on tolls is economic lunacy: Ingram

Independent MP for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has described the Liberal and National Party’s positions on reversing the tolls on the Scoresby Mitcham/Frankston tollway as "economic lunacy".

By Craig Ingram - 29th October 2004 - Back to News

"The Liberal Party should take note of the history of tolls in NSW elections where both sides of politics have made similar commitments and had major trouble delivering, including the Carr government having to do a policy back flip and keep the tolls once they were elected," Mr Ingram said.

"The message that the politicisation of the toll way contract sends to business will potentially place a cost increase on all government contracts.

"Reversing the toll decision is not one that I support and is not in the interest of my constituents or rural Victoria.

"It’s hard to see how the Federal Government can justify the Scoresby as a Federal-funded road, when the Princes Highway connecting Victoria with NSW is not.

"Gippslanders are well aware how appalling the condition of the country’s number one highway is east of Orbost.

"The $500 million that the Federal Government is offering the state would go a long way to fixing this road.

"The National Party’s position on this issue is amazing and difficult to understand considering that they claim to be the party representing rural Australians.

"For the Nats to support the toll free road, they will take over $2.5 billion from our already crumbling rural road infrastructure. It is absolute hypocrisy.

"I call on all sides of politics to endorse the Scoresby Mitcham/Frankston contracts and stop playing politics," Mr Ingram concluded.
