Community groups looking for assistance with their projects, events and facilities are invited to apply for a Bass Coast Shire Council Grant.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 3rd August 2009 - Back to News

Community and Economic Development Director, Patti Wenn, said the grants were an opportunity for community groups to get assistance with their projects.

"There are three categories to our Grants Program," explained Ms Wenn.

"Community groups can apply for assistance with programs and projects, with special events, or to help build or maintain facilities. Groups have from now until 30 September to put in an application.

"Every year we receive many more applications than there is money to fund, so we know this is an important program for our community.

"As a result, $20,000 additional funding has been allocated in the current budget for the Grants Program."

Funding is available to community groups under three categories:

· Community Grants - to promote and assist organisations with self help initiatives and programs

· Special Event - aimed at events which are organised by community groups in the Bass Coast Shire

· Minor Capital Works Scheme - funding up to $5,000 matched $1:$1 (including in kind) for small scale facility development programs

Ms Wenn said many local organisations had seen the benefit of these grants.

"Last year, a huge array of community events and projects were supported," said Ms Wenn.

"Our Community Grants helped the Inverloch Surf Life Saving Club purchase new boards for their Nippers, Phillip Island U3A to buy a new laptop and printer and the Wonthaggi Neighbourhood house to run their Family Summer Holiday Program.

"The Corinella Hall Committee built a disabled access footpath to their car park, Wonthaggi Woodcrafters extended their workshop and Phillip Island’s Croquet Club reconstructed their lawn with assistance from a Minor Capital Works Grant," continued Ms Wenn.

"Our Special Events Grants have assisted popular community events such as the Phillip Island Jazz Festival, the Inverloch Food & Wine Festival, the Gung Ho Festival in Wonthaggi, the Lobster Festival at Kilcunda, and the Corinella & District Summer Art Show.

"Last year, 76 different projects or events were supported by Council through this funding program."

Ms Wenn said the Grants Program offered both financial and in-kind assistance to community groups.

"Application forms and guidelines for the Grants are available on our website and from Customer Service Centres," confirmed Ms Wenn.

"Or you can ring Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) and ask for these to be mailed out.

"It is important that any group interested in applying for a grant reads these guidelines carefully to make sure that their project meets the funding criteria."

Any group needing further assistance with their application should call Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) and speak to the relevant officer:

Community Grants and Minor Capital Works – Acting Arts & Leisure Coordinator, Jeanette Draper.

Special Events Grants – Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane.

All applications must be made on the official application form and meet the funding criteria. Applications close on Tuesday, 30 September 2009.
