Port Albert a heritage-based plan for the futureThe Shire of Wellington has endorsed a vision for Port Albert that will focus attention on the historic waterfront town By Alecia Boys - 3rd May 2002 - Back to News The Port Albert Master Plan and Business Opportunities Study was commissioned by the Shire and Tourism Victoria. It pinpoints economic, environmental and employment issues and targets opportunities for future private and public sector investment, in concert with the State Departments of National Resources and Environment and Infrastructure.
Mayor Malcolm Hole said: "The Shire is laying the foundations to secure the future of Port Albert. We will ensure that the town grows and prospers in accordance with the wishes of the community.
"In compiling the study, both consultant Chris Dance Land Design and the Shire relied strongly upon community consultation and feedback to ensure that any proposals reflect the best interests of families who now call Port Albert home.
"It’s a beautiful town with a strong community spirit, but the streetscape, heritage buildings and poor drainage all need urgent attention. The Shire will rely upon that strong community spirit to help tackle these issues and create a Port Albert that’s fresh, attractive and appealing.
The Mayor said the decision by the Minister for Environment and Conservation to extend the National Park area at Wilson’s Promontory has effectively precluded any economic development of the prom.
This means that private development might well focus further east, particularly on Port Albert, which has marine access to the Promontory, he said.
"The time is right for regeneration of this wonderful old port town, so it is important that we all pull together and work to enrich an environment that’s ripe for change."
Future planning scheme amendments generated by the study will be subject to further community consultation.
