Latrobe Valley jobs issues high on the agenda

Support for Latrobe Valley industries and the creation of new jobs were high on the agenda at The Nationals’ State Conference on the weekend.

The Nationals candidate for Morwell, Sheridan Bond, said she was proud that the Morwell Branch of the Party had successfully put forward a number of policy resolutions supporting more jobs in the Latrobe Valley.

"I’m very proud that our party is a strong supporter of creating new jobs and we have a record that created over 1100 jobs for the Valley under the former Latrobe Valley Industry and Investment Fund.

"Our conference on the weekend passed resolutions supporting the development of the Valley’s brown coal reserves for additional base-load power supplies and the need to consider alternative use for coal such as potential carbon based products.

"This is in stark contrast to the Andrews Labor Government which hastened the closure of Hazelwood Power Station, costing our region 1000 direct jobs and considerable economic heartache.

"On public transport, it was fantastic that not only did the conference pass a resolution but that our leader Peter Walsh announced our commitment for the development of a dedicated line for Gippsland trains through south east Melbourne given the appalling punctuality and performance of the Gippsland line.

"We need this dedicated line to get our train services back on track and the Andrews Labor Government has point blank refused to investigate it.

"It’s taken The Nationals to ensure this issue is on the agenda."

Ms Bond said the conference also supported the timber industry and recreational pursuits undertaken by many Latrobe Valley residents.

"The party passed a specific resolution supporting our timber industry and noted the innovative programs underway at Australian Paper including the proposed Waste to Energy Project and highlighted the importance of shoring up the thousands of jobs that are reliant on a strong, stable native timber and plantation industry.

"The conference also highlighted support for responsible and sustainable hunting which provides significant economic support for the region.

"Indeed a report commissioned by The Nationals when in government found that hunting delivered a return of some $439 million per annum to regional Victoria much of it in the Latrobe Valley."

"I’m proud to be part of a party that supports local jobs and industries and supports the past-times that many Gippslanders take part in."

Ms Bond said that these policy resolutions are now being fed into The Nationals’ policy development process ahead of the election later this year.
