Arts Innovation Festival focuses on art for the young

As part of Latrobe City’s Arts Innovation Festival, a number of events are being planned at the new Latrobe Regional Gallery and other locations with a particular focus on bringing art to young people.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that by devising a program which specifically caters to the young mind, a love of the arts can be fostered from an early age.

"Our program includes animation, fun gallery tours and the ARC enamelling workshops. We want to do away with the age old fallacy that art galleries are not for children. We positively welcome children, teenagers and young adults to the gallery," Cr Middlemiss said.

Latrobe Regional Gallery, Collections Manager, Rodney Scherer explained that from 11am to 12 noon, on both Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May, Detective Inspector Collage will be getting out his magnifying glass to lead children through informative and fun investigations of the mysteries of artwork at the Gallery.

"Primary school children will love this first introduction to the world of art. Detective Inspector Collage will provide all children with special white gloves for a hands-on approach to solving riddles and learning to really look at the paintings. All that is required is for the youngsters to bring with them a keen pair of eyes and an analytical mind," Mr Scherer said.

Latrobe City Arts Manager, Paul Holton, said that another highlight for the young, being held during the weekend of 10 and 11 May are the animated film sessions running from 1pm to 3.30pm on both the Saturday and Sunday. "Stories from around the world, from Australia, Japan, Canada and Europe will be shown," Mr Holton said.

"Subject matters vary enormously, from the wacky "Tongues and Taxis’ about a grumpy man and his cat saving the city from a nuclear waste tongue; to the more serious matter of a boy’s experiences in war-torn Bosnia; to the colourful beauty of the marine life in the Great Barrier Reef," Mr Holton said.

"The subjects are as varied as the animation methods used. There are films using computer imaging, puppetry, drawings, paintings and clay," Mr Holton said.

Mr Holton added that as well as the Art Detective tours and the animations at the LRG, there will be a number of enamelling workshops for children taking place at Gallery ARC Yinnar on Saturday 10 May and Saturday 17 May from 2pm to 4pm.

The Arts Innovation Festival is on now and is a Latrobe City and Australian Innovation Festival Event, and runs to Sunday 18 May. For further information on the children’s and other events in the Festival, contact Latrobe City Council on 1300 367 700.
