Ingram Increases Calls For Government To Step-Up Wild Dog Control

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the Minister for Agriculture, Joe Helper, to boost resources and substantially increase efforts to deal with the wild dog problem within his electorate.

Speaking in Parliament this week, Mr Ingram said wild dogs were an ongoing major problem for agricultural producers right across the Gippsland region.

"The financial loss alone for many local farmers is quite devastating and the problem dogs are becoming increasingly large and hybridised," Mr Ingram told Parliament.

"It is crucial that the government increases the current levels of control, including filling the dogger positions when they fall vacant.

"We need to introduce aerial baiting across the Alpine areas where the dogs are breeding in large numbers in the national parks.

"Wild dogs are skilled at avoiding traps and the government needs to make sure that a range of different measures are available to deal with the problem, including making funding available to assist farmers to close the gaps in the existing wild dog fences.

"We need to make sure that there is an increasing number of doggers and skill-sharing and training to ensure that the skills are maintained."

Mr Ingram said that there needs to be more support for wild dog management committees, to make sure they are listened to and that they represent the view of local communities.

"Wild dogs have always been one of the biggest issues for farmers right across my electorate and I have urged the Minister to provide more resources so this can be managed," Mr Ingram concluded.
