Ingram calls for amendments to Child Employment Bill

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the State Government to amend the Child Employment Bill before it is debated in Parliament next week.

By Craig Ingram - 10th September 2003 - Back to News

Mr Ingram voted against the legislation before the Victorian Parliament, which would require grandparents to obtain a permit if their grandchildren were to assist on their family farm.

"The Child Employment Bill was introduced with the intention of minimising exploitation of children aged 15 years and under in work situations," Mr Ingram explained.

"While I agreed with the Bill in principle, I believe that amendments need to be made to exclude children assisting in family situations such as the family farm.

"Parents and legal guardians are excluded from requiring a permit, but all other relatives would be required to undergo a police check and obtain a work permit regardless if the child was paid for their assistance.

"The Bill lists a number of situations where children are prohibited from working completely, including bay and estuary and offshore fishing boats.

"I believe that the laws do need to be strengthened concerning the employment and supervision of children, but not to the degree that grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles are subjected to this unnecessary scrutiny," Mr Ingram concluded.

The Bill is due before the Upper House when Parliament sits next week.
