Omeo Residents Urged To Conserve Water

Following the recent, unprecedented heatwave, East Gippsland Water is urging customers in Omeo to implement Voluntary Water Savings in addition to current Permanent Water Saving Rules, to help conserve drinking water supplies.

By East Gippsland Water - 13th February 2009 - Back to News

The extreme hot weather of the last couple of weeks, and a prolonged period with no rain, have brought a sudden drop in stream flows in Butchers Creek serving the town. These flows are now no more than a trickle, making it impossible to extract the water.

East Gippsland Water is taking steps to cart in water from its other water sources to maintain the volume of drinking water held in storage at Omeo. This will continue until there is sufficient wet weather to increase stream flows in Butchers Creek and enable extraction to resume.

Customers are urged to conserve water wherever they can, by limiting showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off. They should also ensure taps are not left running while shaving, washing or cleaning teeth and cut back on the watering of gardens and lawns where possible.

Omeo customers should also ensure they adhere to Permanent Water Saving Rules which apply throughout East Gippsland and Victoria every day of they year and stand as minimum requirement that everyone must follow. Key rules include:

· Hand held hoses can be used at any time to wash a car and water lawns and gardens, but MUST always be fitted with a trigger nozzle;

· Manual and automatic watering systems can be used between 6pm and 10 am daily on residential and commercial gardens. They may be used between 8pm and 10am daily on public gardens and sports grounds;

· Paved areas must not be hosed, except for health and safety reasons.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "We are faced with a situation brought on by continuing exceptional circumstances. Our priority is to ensure that there is no disruption to customers’ drinking water supplies in Omeo and by taking steps now we are aiming to avoid the introduction of tougher, staged restrictions later on.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and will be looking to remove the request for Voluntary Water Savings as soon as possible. In the meantime we greatly appreciate the cooperation of customers in reducing water use wherever they can."

Leaflets detailing the Permanent Water Saving Rules and some water saving tips are available from East Gippsland Water’s Omeo office in the East Gippsland Shire Council building in Day Avenue. Copies can also be picked up from the water corporation’s Bairnsdale office (133 Macleod Street) and the information can be viewed and downloaded from the homepage of East Gippsland Water’s website www.egwater.vic.gov.au
