Transition roadmap with local job quotas for wind and hydrogen energy training centres to support the transition from coal power

At its June meeting, Council endorsed a submission to the Victorian Energy Jobs Plan, advocating for a transition roadmap, local job quotas, and wind and hydrogen training centres in Latrobe City.

Latrobe City Council is continuing to advocate on behalf of the community for more investment to support the transition from coal powered energy generation. At its June Council Meeting, Council endorsed the submission to the Victorian Energy Jobs Plan Consultation Paper. The submission called for a transition roadmap specific to Latrobe City, a localised job quota within the new energy sector and at the State Electricity Commission Morwell Office, and the establishment of the wind and hydrogen worker training centres in Latrobe City.

Strategic training opportunity

Establishing dedicated training centres in the community aligns with Latrobe City's proud history in the energy industry and presents a strategic opportunity to equip individuals with the skills needed to thrive in this rapidly evolving sector. This will position Gippsland and Latrobe City as the preferred destinations for international wind and hydrogen workers seeking sector-specific skills.

Mayor of Latrobe City Council, Councillor Darren Howe, said Council remains committed to advocating for projects and priorities that will help Latrobe City thrive. "As part of The Victorian Energy Jobs Plan, we ask the Victorian Government to conduct the next piece of work, to provide a practical localised plan. By leveraging local talent, addressing skills gaps, and promoting job security, we can foster a sustainable future for our region while contributing to Victoria's renewable energy goals," said the Mayor.

Council appreciates efforts

Council acknowledges the significant efforts made by various government agencies, such as the Latrobe Valley Authority, the Net Zero Economy Agency and Jobs and Skills Australia, in addressing the Clean Energy Generation workforce requirements for a net zero economy.
