Retaining wall renewal works for Cape Paterson boat ramp car park gets $110,000 funding as part of Bass Coast Shire open space renewal program

Bass Coast Shire Council has contracted Wiltrack Earthmoving to undertake important works to a retaining wall at the Cape Paterson boat ramp car park.

Construction on the $110,000 project, which is funded by the council as part of its 2022/23 Capital Works Building and Open Space Renewal program, is due to start the week of October 3 2022 and is expected to be completed within five weeks. It includes construction of a new concrete sleeper retaining wall and associated drainage works.

Improving quality

Traffic and pedestrian controls will be in place while the works are undertaken. Bass Coast Mayor Cr Michael Whelan said the existing retaining wall was in poor condition and concerns had been raised about its integrity and potential safety issues.

"Not only will this work improve the quality, aesthetics and safety of the wall, but it will provide a safe and welcome place for boaties to launch and retrieve their boats and watercraft." Cr Whelan said.

Assured access for emergencies

Cr Whelan said, "We appreciate that this project may temporarily present an inconvenience to beach goers, nearby residents, boat ramp users and the greater community and ask for your patience during these few weeks. Every effort will be made to minimise disruptions to the community.

"While the immediate area around the retaining wall will be cordoned as a construction zone, beachgoers can be assured that access for emergency services will continue to be provided." Cr Whelan added.

The timeline for completion of the project is dependent on favourable weather, contractor and supplier availability and potential impacts from COVID-19.
