Climate Change Initiative Recognised

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Climate Change initiative was a finalist in the LGPro Awards.

Council’s Community Strengthening Manager, Antoinette Mitchell, said she was proud the initiative’s adaptability and innovation had been recognised at the statewide award.

"The program works with clients to help them identify and undertake practical home energy efficiency and water conservation measures," said Ms Mitchell.

"It is about reducing the vulnerability of our clients and helping adapt their homes amid the rising costs of utilities.

"Our staff worked with clients to install low flow shower heads, installing window shades, installing water tanks and retrofitting lighting.

"I’d like to congratulate our staff for their work in creating a unique program that suits our community," continued Ms Mitchell.

Since 2008 62 residents have participated in the program, which has been delivered on a relatively small budget.

Council has applied for father funding to continue the program and to extend the eligibility to a population of 75 years and older.

"While this program has helped many of our older residents, it also helps our environment by decreasing household emissions and water consumption," said Ms Mitchell.

If you are 80 years or older and are interested in being a part of the Climate Change program, please contact Council’s Aged and Disability Services Team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
