Advocacy Strategy for Bass CoastBass Coast Shire Council recently adopted phase one of its first Advocacy Strategy. By Portal Admin - 25th September 2017 - Back to News Phase one involves a detailed report which outlines priority projects requiring state government support, and will be submitted for consideration in the 2018 Victorian Government Budget.
The development of the Advocacy Strategy is a direct outcome of the community feedback for the Council Plan 2017-2021.
During the extensive community consultation for the development of the Plan, there was a consistent message that the community wanted Council to provide more advocacy on issues and projects which require support from higher levels of government.
Common themes during the community engagement where advocacy was requested included education, health, main roads and a general desire to see greater federal and state government support in Bass Coast.
In response to the priorities identified by the community, phase one of the Advocacy Strategy will see a suite of submissions requesting funding in the 2018 State Budget, including:
Wonthaggi Secondary College’s new Senior Campus
Wonthaggi High Ball Stadium
Phillip Island Integrated Transport Strategy Stage 2 – Phillip Island Road / Back Beach Road intersection upgrade
Cowes Jetty Replacement
Wonthaggi Hospital upgrade to sub-regional status – Phase 1 new Emergency Department
24 hour medical soloution for Phillip Island
Wonthaggi North East Precinct key infrastructure
South West Gippsland Transport Strategy
Transfer of the (current) Wonthaggi Secondary College Campus site to Council.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, explains that beyond phase one, the Strategy will aim to outline the short, medium and long-term priorities identified in the Council Plan 2017-2021.
"The Advocacy Strategy, and the priorities it will set out, is a direct result of the rigorous community consultation involved in our development of our Council Plan," Cr Rothfield said.
"All of the projects listed in phase one were identified as priories during this consultation. However, it doesn’t stop here. We’ll continue to listen to our community’s needs and advocate on their behalf."
"It is vital that we maintain the political heat on the support needed for these projects, which are critical to the liveability of Bass Coast."
Following phase one of the Advocacy Strategy will be a broader more comprehensive Strategy which will be finalised by Council over the coming months.
The Advocacy Strategy is an outcome of the Council Plan and its extensive community engagement.
