Council plans for new state of the art Saleyards

Wellington Shire Council has agreed "in-principle" to develop a new, state-of-the-art regional livestock selling facility in the Shire to be located near Sale. Council is presently proceeding to acquire a suitable site for the development.

The Council met on Tuesday 20 September, to consider its direction on the saleyards issue after a consultant’s report identified the existing facility – Sale Livestock Exchange – as still serviceable but no longer appropriate for long-term requirements.

Wellington Chief Executive Officer, Lyndon Webb said: "The Council considered several options including maintaining the status quo; redeveloping or selling the existing site; ceasing operation of the saleyards entirely; or, developing new yards and closing the old ones.

"The Council recognises the importance of the saleyards to the community and to the Shire’s economy and we decided to proceed with a brand new facility."

Preliminary planning figures show the new saleyards are expected to cost about $4.8 million, which would create a facility better than any other currently operating in Gippsland.

Mr Webb said the site would need to be about 40ha to accommodate the sale yards, associated water storage, parking areas, holding paddocks and turn-out paddocks where stock can be kept for a limited stay before or after the sale and to minimise any noise, dust and odour.

"It is envisaged that the new facility will be very modern and in line with other regional saleyards. It will have ‘soft stand’ floors, compared to the present `hard stand’ or concrete floors at the Sale Livestock Exchange – it will also have a roof and a lot more room.

"The new facility will embrace best practice, particularly in terms of addressing environmental, animal welfare, quality assurance and functionality issues."

Mr Webb said the Council would be looking to involve the current operator of the saleyards and local stock and station agents in the development of the facility.

The Council has appointed a sub-committee comprising two councillors, the Director of Strategic Development, Director of Assets and Operations, Manager Property, and Manager Development Services to guide the development of the project.
