Community efforts to save water have been recognised, with Gippsland Water introducing new Permanent Water Saving Rules on December 7 2005 effective from 1:00am. Stage 1 Water Restrictions will be lifted from that date. The new rules reflect changing attitudes towards water use and are in line with the State Government’s ‘Our Water, Our Future’ Action Plan.

Gippsland Water CEO John Mitchell said, "The new rules are part of Gippsland Water’s Permanent Water Saving Plan (PWSP) and reinforce water saving patterns developed by our customers during recent low-rainfall years. The Plan was developed with the help of key stakeholders and incorporates feedback from community information sessions."

Customers can begin learning the rules by following these guidelines:

  • Use manual or automatic watering systems between 8pm – 10am daily;
  • Only use trigger nozzles on hoses;
  • Do not hose paved areas; and
  • Apply to Gippsland Water to fill your pool, dam or tank if it is designed to hold more than 2000 litres.

Other areas addressed in the PWSP include installing recirculating water fountains, using high pressure trigger- nozzle hoses to clean vehicles and fitting trigger nozzles to hoses used in commercial gardening operations and the construction industry. The new rules will also guide the operation of watering systems for sportsgrounds.

John Mitchell said, "Gippsland Water customers have a great record of putting water saving strategies into place. We confidently look forward to our customers complying with the PWSP rules and thus help achieve future water efficiency savings."

Copies of the Permanent Water Saving Plan and information on the new rules can be found on www.gippswater.com.au or by contacting Gippsland Water on 1800 066 401.
