Inverloch Boat Ramp Update

Council is continuing to investigate ways to alleviate the ever-increasing problem of sand build-up

Bass Coast Shire Council is continuing to investigate ways to alleviate the ever-increasing problem of sand build-up on the Inverloch boat ramp. The ramp is owned by the Department of Natural Resources but managed by Council.

Since December 2001, Council has trialed a pump to remove sand from the affected area. Regular use of the pump to remove sand ensured the ramp remained open during the summer season.

"A meeting was held in June between ramp users, representatives from NRE, Gippsland Ports and Council as well as experts on dredging to discuss the issue," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.

Meeting participants heard that the natural process of increasing currents, combined with wind and wave, action is causing sand to wash up on and around the boat ramp and channels in the inlet.

Aerial photos from the 1950’s through to 1998 show that Anderson Inlet is highly active and has changed significantly during the past five decades. There was no northern channel in 1950, a significant northern channel in 1975 and a decreasing northern channel in 1998.

"There are some misconceptions that the boat ramp is responsible for silting up the Inlet," said Cr Gains. "However, this is not so as the same situation occurred in 1950 when there was no boat ramp."

"Basically, nature is taking its course and Council is continually investigating what is the most appropriate action to ensure the safe and effective operation of the boat ramp for residents and visitors," he said.

Cr Gains said that Council would continue to consult with boat ramp users and organisations in seeking a solution to the problem. He said that Council welcomes suggestions from interested parties.
