Snakes sighted in suburbia – warning by Council

Sightings of snakes have been reported in the urban back yard of a residence in Railway Crescent, Moe

By Latrobe City Council - 19th December 2001 - Back to News

Sightings of snakes have been reported in the urban back yard of a residence in Railway Crescent, Moe. A concerned resident contacted her neighbours and Latrobe City Council on Monday, suggesting urban gardeners living near bushland and river reserves take care and be aware that snakes may even be found in the garden.

Latrobe City’s Environment Officer, Kevin Roberts, said that while unusual, it was not unknown for snakes to be found in urban gardens. "Many homes back onto river reserves or areas of bushland where snakes are likely to be found, and some snakes may well consider a nearby back yard an extension of their hunting territory," Mr Roberts said.

"Mostly, snakes will be attracted by mice and rats, so ensuring there is nothing on the property to attract rodents, will partially eliminate the problem. Keeping grass trimmed and back yards tidy will also deter snakes, and is most important if young children are likely to be playing there.

"Snakes generally like a quiet life but people living near bushland and rivers need to be aware that they may be in the adjoining urban environment. Garden sheds with a lot of clutter, and wood piles are attractive homes for rodents, so make attractive hunting territory for nearby snakes. Rural residents are generally aware of the possibility of snakes, so take extra care if disturbing wood piles, wear adequate footwear outside and take a torch if visiting the shed or crossing yards at night. Sensible habits such as these should be considered by anyone living where snakes may be encountered.

"Most people who are bitten have agitated the snake in some way, perhaps attempting to kill it. Removal is best left to the experts, and commercial snake handlers can be contacted who can do this efficiently," Mr Roberts added.
